A Car Alarm for your iBook

There has been alot of interest lately in an app called iAlertU, an alarm for your MacBook Pro, and a video showing it in action.

I had been working on a similar project for fun and for my own use, however, iAlertU doesn’t currently work with iBooks or PowerBooks, so I thought people might be interested in this.

In the stuffit file is a version for the iBook, a version for the Powerbook and also it’s source (an Xcode project). It may also work on the MacBook Pro, but I am not able to test that.

It differs from iAlertU in that there is obviously no remote activation, though this could be set up to work from a bluetooth phone using an app like the excellent Romeo. To activate the alarm simply double click the icon, to deactivate, quit the app.

Hey found a link of a forum, great to see a version for the ibook, works fabulous.

I hope you keep working on it and make it better then ialertu, but please keep it free, and open source

  3. Ruud Says:

    Really cool app :)

But, like Fran, my iBook screen didn’t blink, too.

  4. Administrator Says:

    Hi,

I should have mentioned in the post, but the screen blinking has to be set up in System Preferences – Universal Access – Hearing tab and check “Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs”.

I also turned down the alert volume in the System Preferences – Sound so that i just had the alarm and the flash.

I haven’t worked out how to do this any other way as yet.

    Thanks for the comments.

Well i think you have a gathering now, lots of people have ibooks and im looking at the code and i think theres lots that could easily be added on:

    Customisable voice speech
    Inbuilt screen flash
Password to disable alarm when sensors detect movement
    Password to disable alarm
Remove the dock icon and move up into menu bar
Remote control API script so that there is scripts to enable and disable on the go

PS. please keep this open source and free so other people can assist in helping and maybe someone will make that wish list of mine happen

mm dang cant edit comments, anywho ive removed some of the interface and changed the quit cmd keys so people cant just press apple+q, im also working on removing the dock icon atm.

If someone could build a way to control the alarm from another applescript that would be great

PS. orginal developer, if you want to talk to me just email me and we can try making this projetc better

  7. semaja2 Says:

ok well this non editing thing on comments is annoying me now but i have uploaded my modified version, changes are in the changelog file

Thanks semaja, I like the idea of Growl notification for alarm activation.

I also think that there are a a few things that would make this project much better, such as the ones you mentioned, Inbuilt screen flash and turning it into a background app with a menu bar icon so that the alarm can be activated by key combination or other device.

Romeo is a great application, and an action can be set up to activate the alarm with a simple applescript – tell application “alarm” to activate.

  9. semaja2 Says:

yeh im working on the dock icon and asking around about it, my current aim atm is to make the alarm into somewhat of a service, so what happens is u add it to your login items and it is started then u activate the alarm with a script.

PS. if you have msn or gtalk u can msg me so we can work on this together semaja2 (@t) gmail.com

  18. Nexus Says:

A great little program :) . Made my own little script to activate and deactivate it through salling clicker too. I think the sound is a little bit too low though. It could’ve been louder. And I would love to have a password protection to be able to quit

  19. brandon Says:

it doesn’t work for my powerbook.. got it august 2005; do i not have a motion sensor? how can i check?

  20. Administrator Says:

    Hi Brandon,

You might want to check out

    http://swat.gotdns.com

this guy has taken my original code and added support for some of the powerbooks that mine didn’t work with, plus other features,

  21. semaja2 Says:

Thanks for refering people to the site, its actually http://semaja2.net now

Ive added a way of password protection for those that need it, all it does is activates the screensaver, so if you have password protection enabled on screensavers you can have passwords for MultiAlarm

I also added support for macbooks.
