I love this, good work!
November 8th, 2005 at 10:10 pm
For some reason, I cannot get this to install properly on a G4 running OS X.3.9
November 8th, 2005 at 10:14 pm
I cannot get mine to unstuff. It tells me an error occured during the Stuff operation. I would love to install it, but I can’t tell at this point if it’s the file or me.
Thanks!
November 8th, 2005 at 10:29 pm
Ok - I couldn’t get stuffit expander to work, but when I control click on the zipped file I get an option to open with stuffit expander or something called BOMArchiveHelper. When I opened it with that it works fine. I am on 10.4.3.
November 8th, 2005 at 10:35 pm
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the comments.
Mike - It only works on 10.4 I’m afraid. I stated that on versiontracker but forgot to do the same here.
Christy - Glad you got it working. It was zipped using the Mac OS X “Create Archive of…” which I think uses the BOMArchiveHelper rather than Stuffit.

Steve is one of my heros. Love the quotes. But is screen animation part of this screensaver? Mine is static. (12″ PB G4, 10.4.3)
Thanks!
November 9th, 2005 at 1:36 am
Ric,
The quotes and the grey background should just fade out to black and then fade back in again with a new quote. Is it doing that on your set-up or is it just flashing from one quote to the next?
If you could let me know what’s happening, I’ll look into it.
November 9th, 2005 at 8:28 am
One. There’s a typo in the second quote: the second sentence needs to be capitalized.
Two. Could the quotes possibly be randomized? They run in a set order right now.
November 9th, 2005 at 10:25 am
David,
I’ll sort out that quote, I did notice it but forgot to change it.
Randomizing the quotes is something I was working on, but couldn’t find an easy way of doing it. I’ll try and do it for the next release.
Steve.

I am reluctant to install a .pkg when I don’t understand why it’s necessary. Is there some reason you don’t simply distribute this as a .saver package? (Yeah, I could inspect the contents of the .pkg, but that’s an unnecessary inconvenience.)
November 9th, 2005 at 5:12 pm
Snoozer,
I understand your concerns, however, the screensaver has been created using Quartz Composer and is saved as a qtz file. These files can be recognized as screensavers by OS X 10.4 only when they are put in a Library/Screen Savers folder.
They don’t auto install themselves like a .saver package would. The easiest way I could find for the average mac user to install the screensaver without going into the library was to make an installer package.
I have now added a link to the iQuotes.qtz file on this article.

How about a widget that does this??? I look at them way more than I use a screen saver… any other widget voters out there?
November 9th, 2005 at 9:18 pm
Yeah, I would love a widget.

[...] Quando uno è carismatico è carismatico, c’è ben poco da fare. Sto pensando a Steve Jobs, ovviamente. Great stuff, I like the graphics a lot. Is there a way I can put my own quotes in … would be great!
November 10th, 2005 at 12:25 am
really nice work. you know what i would love to see implemented using your nice typography? Brian Eno’s “oblique strategies”. it’s a set of sentences meant to help get a creative person rethink their work. great fun. i have it as a widget, but it’s just not as beautiful.
November 10th, 2005 at 12:53 am
Unfortunately it doesn’t work when my resolution is set to 1920×1440, but does work at 1280×1024.
November 10th, 2005 at 1:16 am
Could you change it so that with multiple monitors, they each sow a different quote? Currently, each gets the same quote.
November 10th, 2005 at 1:31 am
Its great, it REALLY is, but can we PLEASE have curly quotes and no widows. PLEASE.
It IS great though.
November 10th, 2005 at 4:23 am
Very nice job on this screen saver. I added a gaussian blur filter in Quartz Composer to the reflected text because it seemed a little harsh…
November 10th, 2005 at 6:39 am
If it is not a .saver file, how would I go about uninstalling it.
P.S. I like it, but need to uninstall it on a particular computer!
November 10th, 2005 at 7:19 am
How did you go doing this?
November 10th, 2005 at 7:21 am
i really wanna use but no quartz /quartz extreme on my computers and im using 10.4.2
November 10th, 2005 at 10:06 am
Hi all,
I’m overwhelmed by the interest and appreciate all the comments and ideas, keep ‘em coming. I’ve got a long list of suggestions for the next version. There will probably be a small update soon and then I’ll work on a couple of things that will make a great iQuotes 2.
For those who are requesting a widget - something that I had though about before - look out for it.
Jet-star - I hadn’t realised that bigger monitors were a problem - I’ll look into it.
Nick - It is not a saver file, but the package installer installs it in the same place as screen savers - /Library/Screen Savers - just drag the file out of there to uninstall.
Ron - You can view the screensaver if you have OS X 10.4. It was built using quartz composer which is installed with the developer tools, but this is not needed for viewing quartz files, only editing. If you run the package installer it will put the appropriate file in the right place. You then need to go to System Preferences - Desktop and Screen Savers pane and select iQuotes from the list of screensavers.

iquotes - Steve Jobs Quote Screensaver. Great fun….
November 10th, 2005 at 5:27 pm
That’s way cool - looks like I found my new screensaver!
I added a few tweaks to get quotes to zoom in and out a bit to liven it up a little.
Hope you don’t mind!

Nice job!
One comment…the quotes themselves need to be raised up a bit above the “reflective surface”…letters with descenders (y, g, etc.) end up partially below the surface, which breaks the illusion.
Very nice otherwise!
November 10th, 2005 at 8:32 pm
Hey Mike,
as you might have read … 10.4 only ….
November 10th, 2005 at 8:43 pm
Really fine work!
But, I want to adjust the fade out time in relation to the words of a quote.
:wq!

November 10th, 2005 at 9:23 pm
Hi Everyone,
I’ve changed the “” to curly ones and I’ve re-ordered the quotes on the feed.
So once your caches update themselves, you will see the changes.
And I’ve added a few more.
November 11th, 2005 at 1:01 am
Cool. No problems here. Just downloaded the .qtz-file, put it in Library/Screen Savers, go to System Preferences and choose the new saver.
Q: So if I use the other one that needs an internet connection, I will get more quotes all the time?
There ara lots of funny quotes (not only from Steve) in the book Apple Confidential by Owen W. Linzmayer. Any plans on turning this into a saver with of quotes from Woz, de Gassée, Bill and others as well (only quotes about Apple of course)? That is my wish.
Cheers!
November 11th, 2005 at 1:11 am
Really dig the saver! Two suggestions:
1) Echo on the randomization!
2) The background gradient could use a tiny bit of noise to break up the banding.

two thumbs up on the curly quotes

“Better to be a pirate than to join the navy.”
- Steve Jobs - Referring to the pirate flag that flew over Apple’s headquaters in 1983
I believe that quote was one of three keyphrases for a large Apple meeting/conference, and the Pirateflag was attached to the Macintosh building after that meeting. So the flag was actually a reaction to that, not the other way around.
Just to nitpick
Great saver, I love it.
November 11th, 2005 at 3:22 pm
How about a text version of the quotes. I just love to read them. I’ll vote for a widget too!
November 11th, 2005 at 3:39 pm
To Ian: Sorry I can’t get any quotes with your version of iQuotes. What have I to do to make it function?
November 11th, 2005 at 4:48 pm
Hey sato
Weird! I checked it out on another machine and you’re right - it’s just the blank background.
It looks great on my machine here… I exported it as a QuickTime movie so you could see but the movie is just the background too.
I’m no expert with this stuff - I simply added an LFO and routed some of the connections through math blocks to make it zoom in & out so I don’t know why it wouldn’t work on another machine.
Do we have a Quartz Composition expert here that could explain why an identical Quartz Composition works great on one machine but is blank on another?
November 11th, 2005 at 5:27 pm
I just downloaded your version again, Ian, and it all seems fine.
Although I’ve updated the feed (added curly quotes) I haven’t moved it and I can see that your quartz file is still pointing to the correct url - the same place that my version is.
Is there an internet connection on these macs that you are trying it on?
November 11th, 2005 at 5:54 pm
Works fine, looks great on 20″ ACD (I know, no screensaver needed…)
Thank you!
Don´t forget Woz, please: “Enjoy what you do and you will always consider your life a success”.
(Mac since ´91, Apple shareholder since ´94)
November 11th, 2005 at 6:17 pm
Hi Administrator,
So my version is OK for you? You see the spinning zooming text OK?
If so, then I’m glad because I was worried people might think I’m mad posting a blank version!
The machine I tried it on here that didn’t work was 10.4.3 server (with an internet connection that’s fine)… maybe it’s something to do with that?
My only other thought is that the server machine doesn’t have Quartz Composer… maybe my tweak only works if you have Quartz Composer (and/or Apple’s Developer Tools) installed?
Do you have Composer or Dev Tools sato?
Anybody else see mine as blank?
November 11th, 2005 at 8:22 pm
Ian, youre one works for me to. NICE
November 11th, 2005 at 8:44 pm
Nice screensaver. But for the next version, can you work on the mirror effect a little? There needs to be more space between the text and it’s mirror image.
November 11th, 2005 at 10:27 pm
Can you send me the quotes in a .txt file? I would love to add them to my site via a script I have.

I love this idea, and it’s implementation is great!
I may be a bit too picky, but it would look even better if the reflections of descenders (the lower parts of g, p, y etc.) didn’t overlap with the actual type.
Just my 2ç. Keep up the great work!
Otto
November 12th, 2005 at 2:14 pm
One more thing. It would be great if there would be a setting for the time each quote is shown. It’s too quick for my taste as it is now.
November 12th, 2005 at 8:16 pm
This is a great job!
Congratulations…
November 12th, 2005 at 11:22 pm
Love the idea, but it doesn’t show up in the screen saver panel though. All other savers are .saver while this is .qtz?

Mans,
It may have something to do with the fact that not all macs are able to display Quartz Compositions.
It depends on your video card.

This looks great, although I’d be happy to donate if I could substitute my own quotations collection (local XML file or something). I have a big collection and have been looking for a cool way to display them.

I saw the same problem as otto was seeing. I pulled up quartz composer
and edited the “Article Title” Macro, then edited the Top Sprite (Sprite 2)
so that Y Position was -0.7. This kept the two images from colliding.
Cheers
December 16th, 2005 at 12:08 pm
Thanks for a good work!
It would be nice if quotes were changed only by changing the text and without darkening the entire screen. Also I’d like an option to choose the time the quotes are displayed. (Because people for whom English is not native language (like me) usually read slower than English-speaking ones.)
Regards!

Great screesaver. How can I or someone add more quotes. It is getting old seeing the same ones repeat.
Thanks.
April 25th, 2006 at 10:21 pm
Would it be possible to maybe make a minor change to pull the image embedded in a flickr RSS feed rather than pull from the quotes RSS feed and place that as the angled image with a reflection? I tried to work at it but know nothing of quartz composer.
